Korean and American Eating Habits

 

Do you have any unique eating habits? How about in your country? Is there any special eating custom? After I came to America, I had to be accustomed to American eating custom. Actually, it is not easy to me up to now because there are many different eating habits in Korea. However, there are also some similar eating habits between Korea and the U.S.

The first difference of eating habits between Korea and America is main dishes. A Korean main dish is rice cook and Kimchi, but American usually eats bread and meat. Many Korean couldn’t eat diet without Kimchi; therefore, Korean living in America visits Korean market for buying Kimchi. The second is the eating tools. American usually use a fork and knife for eating meals, but Korean uses a spoon and chopsticks. The last difference is the eating place. American eats meals at kitchen with all family members, but many Korean eats meals at the living room. In addition, Korean eats meals separately between men and women of the family member long time ago.

On the other hand, Korean eating place and main dishes are more and more being similar with Americans. In the new generation of Korean such as teenagers, the eating rate of a pizza and hamburger for the main dishes is more and more growing up. It is same with American society situation. For example, American children also like to eat fast food more and more. Furthermore, Korean children use a fork more than chopsticks because the using that is harder than a fork. Finally, Korean housing style is changing as like American apartment. Therefore, many Korean urban citizens usually eat a meal at the kitchen.

In conclusion, there are several differences of the main dishes, eating tools and place between American and Korean, but the differences are changing more and more similarly since globalization. In brief, eating habits between Korean and American are very similar nowadays, even though there were many differences. However, in my generation using chopsticks is more convenient and eating steam-rice with kimchi is more delicious.
