Inequality of Women and Men
Do you think women are now equal to men? In my opinion, women still have a long way to go before they are equal to men. Actually, the equality between women and men depends on the situation of each country. Also, women’s right is growing up since 1960s. However, there are still many unequal things in the world. I want to talk about the situation of Korea. More than hundreds of years of the Confucian culture can’t have been changed in a mere 30 odd years about the unequal society structure of women in the Korean. There are several distinctions of sex in Korea.
First of all, government still is made up in its majority of men. For example, most Korean is still thinking that women can not be the president of Korea because men only can the work of the president. This kind of thought is very conservative and it is made by the Confucianism. If the Confucian thought will not be changed, it is not easy to change the distinction of women even though there are the departments for women, Women Department and the Korean Women’s Development Institute, in the central government.
Second, women still earn less than men in many work situations. In the modern society, more than 90% Korean women graduate a high-school and more than 50% of the high-school graduation women have the B.A. degree, also more than 10% women of the having the B.A. degree have the M.A. or Ph.D. Although they have a good education, it is not easy to get a good job because many companies prefer to men than women. The reason why Korean company prefers men is because women need the break for pregnancy. Therefore, most young women who have a good salary job don’t want to be pregnant. In the other hand, there are many job opportunity for women in the law income and part time position.
Third, women are still portrayed in superficial manner in television shows. For instance, there are some TV programs as like American drama, Bay Watch, in Korea, too. Also, the main woman actor’s sexual vision on TV drama is often to be social problems in Korea nowadays. However, the commercial TV programs in the capital society never have forgiven these kinds of women’s sexual merchandising because it is related to make money. Korea is also one of the capitalism nations; therefore, it is also not easy to change this situation even though the Women Department makes some special laws.
In conclusion, women should be equal to men but there are many obstacles. In Korea, many distinctions between women and men, such as women’s sexual merchandising, the differentiation of salary and government’s majority of men, will be remain until the Confucianism is being disappear.
